Affirmative

Many Christians want to affirm people who are LGBTQI+, but have been told that it conflicts with being faithful to the Bible.

Find out why that isn’t the case: you can be a biblically faithful Christian and support LGBTQI+ people fully.

Straightforward and easy to follow, yet based on the best scholarship, Affirmative helps resolve the tensions around the Bible, sexuality and gender without compromising love or scriptural faithfulness.

Excellent easy to read book that doesn't leave academic rigour behind. Really good book - not offensive to those who disagree with its premise, but full of challenge. A good book for those who are affirmative and those who are not.

A clear and helpful engagement with the Bible and LGBTQI+ inclusion The author tackles head-on the accusation that Christians who affirm LGBTQI+ relationships do so by ignoring their scriptures. This book is a detailed engagement with the Bible, looking carefully not only at the so-called 'clobber' texts, but also other passages that shed light on how Christians today might respond biblically to this often-divisive issue.

Fantastic book, clear, accessible and well researched Jonthan's writing is very clear, accessible and brings his insightful mind to this vitally important topic. You most definitely can say "Yes to the Bible and Yes to People Who Are LGBTQI+". I've known that intuitively for many years but Jonathan helps to articulate that.

Bible believers can be affirmative!! Excellent read for evangelicals that believe the bible is inclusive. Too much rhetoric disqualifying Christians because of this opinion. The book puts forward a solid, in my view indisputable argument for inclusivity

Concise and clear. This excellent book is a welcome addition to the growing library of resources by evangelical Christians who are questioning the accepted 'party line' about same-sex relationships.

altogether, a worthwhile endeavour This book is aimed squarely at evangelical Christians, with the intention that they should be encouraged to think through the oft-repeated proposition that the Bible clearly condemns same-sex intercourse and gender re-assignment, and to consider the possibility that alternative interpretations of key texts may in fact be more accurate and more true to God's purposes for mankind. Not being an evangelical myself, I can't say whether the book succeeds in this aim. I did not myself learn much that was new to me, but I hope that the attention to detail and determination to base all arguments on scripture itself may appeal to evangelicals and entice them into taking a broader view of this subject than is customary in that wing of the Christian Church. This is altogether, a worthwhile endeavour at a key time, when the church of England is considering seriously the possibility of allowing same-sex marriages in church.

Does what it says on the cover This book takes scripture seriously- considering the original languages and context. It doesn’t ignore the real heartfelt dilemma of people wanting to celebrate their LGBT colleagues, family and friends without compromising God’s Word. He goes through the so called “clobber” texts with good insight. Ideal for evangelicals hebut also anyone who wants to understand what scripture actually does say (and also doesn’t say) about LGBTQ+ people and relationships.

Very Helpful! This is a brilliant addition to the literature surrounding this subject - it gives a reasonable, pragmatic but scholarly rationale for 'affirmation' and full inclusion of LGBTQI+ individuals in the church. In particular Jonathan addresses the 'TQI+' element of this group, so often superficially treated (if at all) when 'same sex' issues are being addressed. Thoroughly recommended.

Affirmative’ is a rare thing: a book that carries the due weight of scholarship but remains eminently accessible to all enquiring Christians. This would provide rich material for small-group study.

In exploring the compatibility between same sex relationships and a deep commitment to scripture, Dr Tallon gives us a readable and scholarly explanation of how mistranslations and failure to understand the original meanings and contexts of various biblical texts have clouded our perception. I believe that this work provides a valuable and coherent Christian theology that supports the acceptance, affirmation and celebration of same sex relationships within the church.

Rt Rev’d David Gillett

This is a book that so many evangelicals have been longing for – an accessible, theological and deeply Biblical explanation of why God calls us to affirm and celebrate LGBT+ people.  Jonathan has a great gift of speaking truth to our hearts, which will challenge and bless all who have struggled with understanding certain ‘clobber texts’.
